Joe Keefe is President and CEO of Pax World Funds (“Pax”) and President of its investment adviser, Impax Asset Management LLC, formerly Pax World Management LLC, as well as CEO of its majority-owned subsidiary, Pax Ellevate Management LLC.
Under Joe’s leadership, Pax has become a leading innovator in the rapidly growing field of sustainable investing. Prior to joining Pax, Joe was President of NewCircle Communications, a strategic consulting and communications firm specializing in corporate social responsibility and public policy-oriented communications. He served as Senior Adviser for Strategic Social Policy at Calvert Group from 2003-2005 and as Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Citizens Advisers from 1997-2000. He is a former member of the Board of Directors (2000-2006) of US SIF, the trade association representing asset managers and investors engaged in sustainable investing throughout the United States.
Joe is a leading advocate for investing in women and the critical role that gender diversity plays in business success. He co-founded the Thirty Percent Coalition and served as the inaugural chair of its institutional investor committee, whose work has led to women joining more than 100 previously non-diverse boards. He is a former Co-Chair of the Leadership Group for the Women’s Empowerment Principles, a joint program of the United Nations Global Compact and UN Women, and in 2014 he was honored at the United Nations as one of five recipients of the Women’s Empowerment Principles Leadership Award. He is also a former board chair of the Women Thrive Alliance, a global network of organizations that worked to achieve gender equality.
Ethisphere magazine has named Joe one of the “100 Most Influential People in Business Ethics” five times, Women’s eNews recognized him as one of “21 Leaders for the 21st Century” in 2012 — he was the sole male honoree, and Financial Times named Joe one of its 10 “top feminist men” of 2015 for his work to help women succeed in business and beyond. He was named 2016 “Social Innovator of the Year” by the University of New Hampshire, and he received the Global Leadership Award from the World Affairs Council of New Hampshire that same year. In 2018, Barron’s named Joe one of the “20 Most Influential People in Sustainable Investing” for his work to advance gender equality.
Joe serves on the board of New Hampshire Public Radio. He is a former Democratic nominee for United States Congress in New Hampshire’s First Congressional District and a former Chair of the New Hampshire Democratic Party and member of the Democratic National Committee. Joe received a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from the College of the Holy Cross and a Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law. Prior to entering the investment management industry, he was in private law practice for 16 years.
