The Future of Asset Management in North America
The past 18 months have planted multiple seeds of disruption which are setting a dynamic new horizon of growth for the industry in the coming decade.
Kevin Cho will share the insights from our annual report on the state of the industry: "Crossing the horizon: North American asset management in the 2020s."
This report examines the performance of the industry over the course of the pandemic, revealing a picture of both resilience and change, including the acceleration of long-standing product trends (e.g., ETFs and private markets), the widening performance gaps between the “best” and the “rest”, and a set of discontinuous trends that are emerging at the intersection of a new macroeconomic environment, a generational shift in societal attitudes, business model innovation and rapid technological change.
is a Partner in McKinsey & Company’s Wealth & Asset Management Practice, and Leader of Global WAM Solutions, including Performance Lens, a proprietary suite of technology-enabled data and analytics tools for asset managers including Global Asset Management Benchmarking Survey, Global Growth Cube, Sales Alpha, and Financial Advisor Customer Experience Solution.
He serves leading retail and institutional asset managers, insurers, and broker dealers on topics including growth strategy, M&A, product management, distribution, advanced analytics, and operating model design. He co-authored McKinsey’s industry reports including “Crossing the Horizon: North American Asset Management in the 2020s,” “Adapting to a New Normal in European Asset Management,” and “Achieving Digital Alpha in Asset Management.”
Kevin also co-leads the McKinsey New York office’s pro bono efforts with local performing arts and educational organizations. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Kaufman Music Center.
Prior to McKinsey, Kevin co-founded and led marketing for an ecommerce startup, as well as served in investing roles in private equity fund-of-funds and structured finance. He holds an S.B. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Jimmy Zhao, CFA
serves leading Wealth and Asset Management companies on growth strategy and commercial transformations. His clients include leading direct brokerages, broker dealers, bank-owned wealth firms and RIAs. He also leads the McKinsey Private Equity and Wealth Management cluster, supporting all deals in the sector including advisor technologies, turnkey platforms, and RIA aggregators. Prior to joining McKinsey & Company, Jimmy worked at Credit Suisse in multiple roles including portfolio management. He has been a CFA charterholder since 2012 and serves on the CFA Society Boston’s Programs & Education Advisory Council.
