Description
CFA Society Boston invites you to join us on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, for what is sure to be an informative discussion on the private equity industry from an insider's perspective. Once an obscure niche of the investment world, private equity has grown into a juggernaut, with consequences for a wide range of industries as well as the financial markets. Private equity funds control companies that represent trillions of dollars in assets, millions of employees, and the well-being of thousands of institutional investors and their beneficiaries. Even as the ruthlessness of some funds has made private equity a poster child for the harms of unfettered capitalism, many aspects of the PE business remain opaque, hidden from the normal bounds of accountability.

Our speaker, Jeff Hooke, is a former investment banker and author of the book, "The Myth of Private Equity," who is now a finance lecturer at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School.

*This program will include food, beverages, and networking. Registration closes on Monday, May 29, 2023.

Speaker Bio
Jeff Hooke is a finance lecturer at the Johns Hopkins Carey School of Business.  Earlier, he was a managing director at Focus, LLC, an investment bank serving middle market companies.  He served as Vice President of Research at the Committee on Economic Development, a nonprofit think tank.  Previously, Hooke operated his own consulting firm, was a director of Emerging Markets Partnership (a $5 billion private equity fund), a principal investment officer of the World Bank Group ( with a focus on private investments overseas) ,  an investment banker with Lehman Brothers and Schroder Wertheim, and a private investment associate with Metropolitan Life..

Hooke is the author of five books: The Myth of Private Equity, An Inside Look at Wall Street’s Transformative Investments (Columbia University Press);” Security Analysis on Wall Street (1998, 2nd edition 2013, John Wiley & Sons); M&A:  A Practical Guide to Doing the Deal (1996, 2nd edition 2015, John Wiley & Sons);, The Dinosaur Among Us: The World Bank and Its Path to Extinction,( Booksurge, 2007); and The Emerging Markets (2001, John Wiley & Sons).  Barron’s called Security Analysis on Wall Street “a welcome successor to Graham and Dodd’s Security Analysis,” the seminal work often quoted by Warren Buffett. A portion of the book was required reading for the CFA exam. As an expose of the PE business, his latest book, , “The Myth of Private Equity,” has been the subject of many media interviews and podcasts.

He has co-authored several peer-reviewed academic papers in finance and has written many position papers for non-profit think tanks. He holds an MBA from the Wharton School and a BS from the University of Pennsylvania. Besides Hopkins, Mr. Hooke has taught at several universities and the New York Institute of Finance. He lectures on finance topics at industry forums around the world, including the CFA societies of New York, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Baltimore, Washington, London, Paris, Moscow, Munich, Istanbul, Copenhagen, Beijing, and Bangkok.
