Description

2020 was a historic period for global markets, particularly the oil market and energy stocks. The year that ushered in a pandemic across the globe inflicted substantial demand-side damage to a sector already hobbled over the past few years by secular headwinds. The price of a barrel of oil experienced one of the worst price drops on record, with contracts for West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil at one point trading at negative prices. The S&P 500 Energy Sector posted the worst total return performance among all the sectors--down 34%--and sits at a historically low market-cap weighting of around 2% within the large-cap index.   

While the energy sector has turned around some of its performance at the start of 2021, long-term questions remain on its future, which hinges on the vaccine rollout, geopolitics, peak oil demand, and a new administration in Washington that is focused on spurring a rapid shift to renewable energy. Where do oil markets and energy stocks go from here? Does the oil market have the fundamental setup to rally beyond its current level? How should investors evaluate the alpha opportunities among the various energy sub-industries?

Speaker Bios

Warren Pies, ERP, Founder and Chief Macro Strategist of 3Fourteen Research
At 3Fourteen, Warren works closely with a team of analysts, data scientists, and developers whose expertise ranges from machine learning, time series analysis, and application development.  Prior to founding 3Fourteen Research, Warren led Ned Davis Research’s Energy and Commodity strategy. In that role, he built the firm’s commodity-related studies, models, and unique indicators. His research combines proprietary fundamental, technical and macro indicators to identify major investment themes and market trends affecting capital markets. 

Warren is a frequent contributor to the media including participating in the 2013 Barron’s MLP Roundtable discussion, the Wall Street Journal, CNBC, and RealVision. In 2014, Euromoney Institutional Investor awarded Warren the Padraic Fallon award for his research on the Shale Revolution. Outside of the research world, Warren has worked as a practicing attorney specializing in regulatory approvals for various industrial activities and projects. He has also owned, operated, and sold a portfolio of self-storage properties to a national REIT. 

He earned both his Bachelor of Science and Juris Doctorate from the University of Florida. Warren is an Energy Risk Professional – Certified by the Global Association of Risk Professionals.
