Allyship: How Does It Work and Why?

Description
Did you know that only 1 in 9 portfolio managers is a woman, and that 78% of investment professionals are white? Would you like to serve as an ally for diverse colleagues, amplifying their voices and benefitting from their perspectives? We invite you to join us for a lively discussion, covering questions such as:

- What is Allyship in the workplace and why is it critically important from an investment and business perspective?
- How can I become a great ally?
- How do we know when Allyship efforts are working?
- What are best practices related to Allyship and how can we incorporate them into our workflow?

In this virtual presentation, expert speakers will address these questions. Speakers include: Erinn King, CFA, Past Chair of the Board of Directors of the CFA Society of Boston; Amy Orlov, from the Forte Foundation; and Kim Havens and Noa Ries, from Kahilla. The Moderator, Sean Fullerton, CFA, will speak as an interested learner and provide representation of the CFA Society of Boston members who want to serve as allies.

Speaker Bios

Kim Havens had an 18-year career in real estate development leading high-profile commercial real estate projects. Due to the lack of women in the industry, she sought out female peers and mentors and thought a lot about how to get more women at the top. This ultimately culminated in becoming the President of Commercial Real Estate Women of San Francisco. Kim recognized that the women around her were extremely skilled, often overly qualified for positions, but lacked the confidence and sponsorship to move up in their careers and felt a great desire to help women break down barriers. In 2018, she partnered with Noa Ries, to form Kahilla, a digital leadership development platform for women delivering coaching, content, and peer learning that is industry agnostic.

Erinn King, CFA is a Managing Director at Payden & Rygel.  A founding member of the firm’s Boston office, Erinn is responsible for client relations and business development for the East Coast, Bermuda, and Canada.  She leads the firm’s global insurance practice and serves as a liaison to the firm’s London and Milan offices, as well as the Metzler/Payden joint-venture.  Erinn is a director for Payden Global Funds PLC, Payden & Rygel’s Dublin-domiciled UCITS Funds. Erinn is also a co-leader of Payden & Rygel’s Diversity & Inclusion initiative. Prior to joining Payden & Rygel, Erinn was a Vice President at Wellington Management Company, LLP, where she held roles in fixed-income portfolio communications and insurance relationship management. Erinn also worked for Concordia Capital LLC prior to joining Wellington. Erinn is a Past Chair of the board for CFA Society Boston.  She is also a trustee for the New England Foundation for the Arts and Jose Mateo Ballet Theatre. Erinn earned an MBA in Finance at Boston University and also holds a BFA and MFA in Dance from the University of Oklahoma.

Amy Orlov is the Vice President of Programs at Forté, a role in which she introduces women to new ideas and deep networks.  She is constantly finding new ways to leverage and extend Forté's programming to provide additional impact for women in college, MBA and professional audiences.  Amy is also a co-author and architect of the Forté Men as Allies initiatives which offer men a framework to be stronger allies in gender equity. Prior to Forté, Amy was the Director of Professional Education and Training at the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), managing a portfolio of onsite and online conferences, symposia and training events. Prior to that, Amy was the Director of the MBA Program Office and Student Services at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. Throughout her career, Amy has also worked as an educational consultant, providing clients with program design and delivery, assessment and strategy input, and workshop facilitation and leadership program development. Amy holds a Master of Education from the University of Maryland, and a Master of Government and a B.A. in Communications from the University of Pennsylvania. She lives in Philadelphia with her human, canine, and feline daughters.

Noa Ries - With a career focused on building communities and women’s empowerment, Noa Ries has been a nimble serial entrepreneur for most of her career.  Before launching Kahilla, Noa was the founder & CEO of Vie Active Inc., a premium high-performance activewear label designed specifically for women, launched in Sydney, Australia. Prior to Vie, Noa started Ozfit, a fitness business that became Singapore’s best known and largest outdoor fitness community.  Earlier, Noa worked in media sales for a Conde Nast publication in Australia. Moving countries and cities five times throughout her career and personal life has necessitated reinvention and instilled in Noa the importance of advocating for oneself as well as the value of investing in your own development. In 2018, with a vision to transform the culture of the corporate world and see more women in positions of senior leadership she partnered with Kim Havens, to form Kahilla; an innovative digital platform to scale access to personal and professional development for women in the corporate world.
